Expressions, sounds and speech all fall under the category of communication through language. Communication is a key concept that we all use in corresponding with others. In communicating with others we use direct and indirect messages. In most cases the understanding of the message differs from the actual message itself. This is done through figurative language. Figurative language is the act of saying something other than what is actually ment. Figurative language has many categories such as metaphor, hyperbole , symbol, simile and many others.

Many poems consist of figurative language which may be hard to understand because the poet uses implied content. The composition is intended to create an emotional reaction as well as a relation between ideas that are not relevant.
